Rabbi Amram Gabay was born in Morocco. He received smicha from Yeshivat Eshel in Strasbourg, France. Rabbi Gabay continued on in the Yeshiva for many years as mashgiach ruchani. In 1984, Rabbi Gabay and his family came to Los Angeles, California to become the Mara D’atra of Adat Yeshurun Congregation. The shul started in a small store front and today is one of the largest Sephardic congregations in Los Angeles. Rabbi Gabay believes in the importance of spreading Torah and has helped many smaller shuls open up in many different neighborhoods in Los Angeles.
Limud hatorah, Derech Eretz, and Ahavat Yisrael are the foundations of life and of paramount importance to Rabbi Gabay. His mission is to help his fellow man see the beauty of Torah and increase Torah learning in the community. Therefore, the next logical step was for him to build a beautiful elementary school which teaches these precepts and where children can go home and share what they have learned with their parents. Rabbi Gabay named his school after Rabbi Chaim ben Attar who was the Or Hachaim Hakadosh. It is Rabbi Gabay’s dream that Torah should be the guiding light in how we all live our lives.
Mrs. Raskin grew up in Queens, New York and later here in Los Angeles, California. She obtained her Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from California State Bakersfield. She taught for nearly a decade in New York while her husband learned in yeshiva. After her husband received Rabbinical Ordination from Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim they moved to Los Angeles with their children. Mrs. Raskin taught for several years in Los Angeles. In 2002, she joined Or Hachaim, became principal and taught the first Pre 1st class. Mrs. Raskin held the position of Preschool director for six years while the school was developing and growing. Today, Mrs. Raskin spends her day developing and implementing policies, programs, curriculum activities, promoting the educational development of each student and the professional development of each staff member. In 2013 Mrs. Raskin was honored with the Milken Educators Award. Mrs. Raskin thanks Hashem for giving her the opportunity to impact the lives of the Or Hachaim community and watching the students grow into wonderful young adults.
Rabbi Gabay, our dean, offers each child the recipe for being respectful Jews with derech eretz first and foremost, while Mrs. Raskin, our principal, gives them the recipe for a solid education. The staff adds a dash of love and a pinch of attention. When all is said and done, we have the most perfect recipe for success and our students are proof of that.

What our students have to say about YOHA
My class got the opportunity to have a hands-on relationship with our teachers and to really prepare ourselves for our upcoming high school academic career. The teachers were always open to answering any questions, and validating our ideas. Or Hachaim taught me to be resourceful when I am attempting to achieve something.

Or Hachaim has touched my life in numerous ways in which only now I have come to acknowledge. The learning environment was a place of warmth, where students felt a special bond with their teachers. I have been especially grateful for the values Or Hachaim has instilled in me and my peers.

Or Hachaim has taught me the middot of having gratitude and positivity. I took these traits that I learned from Or Hachaim and brought them with me to high school. Or Hachaim’s friendly and supportive environment helped shape me into the person I am today. Thank you Rabbi Gabay and Mrs. Raskin for all of your hard work.

When I recently had to make a speech in front of 300 people I realized how much Or Hachaim brought out my inner confidence. Listening and watching Rabbi Gabay and Mrs. Raskin’s speeches throughout the years inspired me to take upon myself different leadership positions in pro-Israel and Jewish organizations. Or Hachaim wasn’t an ordinary school. It was our home away from home.
