Language Arts

Pre 1st uses the McGraw Hill Big Books. Students learn phonics, phonemic awareness, high frequency words, fluency and comprehension skills, listening comprehension and writing through this series. By the end of the year students are reading multisyllabic words and short stories.

The 1th-4th graders use Houghton Mifflin Reading based on the California State Standards and the 5th-8th graders use Mosdos Press based on the Common Core Standards, literature based curriculum. Phonics, decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and writing are integral parts of the program. Literary themes are presented and studied in all grades using classic and contemporary novels. The lower elementary school enjoys a Literacy Night for the parents. The major objective of the elementary program is to engage students’ imaginations through carefully planned, sequential lessons and to create a meaningful and integrated language experience for students.
